Classic Ads depicting classic mens and ladies styles from the 60's

love the classic Jag and the classic ladies fashion with headband
My first impressions of fashion were thrust upon me in the Middle sixties onward I remember being really comfortable with the colors , styles , fabrics etc. In the 70's as a teenager not so much!, about the only thing I took fro the 70's ? The Levi pin whale cord jeans in a few colors mostly a stone or ivory color the rest could be burned for all I cared and it did! being mostly the "new" Poly blend that were all the rage and the hideous.  Thanks too the web I  searched around and found some really cool ads which do a much better job of visualising the essence of the 60's from a fashion point of view. By 1967-68 things where changing in this country, for a 10 year period , conservative clothing and style ruled, from this really the core of the prep fashions were derived and expanded upon .As a country we were so much more formal and people truly cared about the way they presented themselves , men and women dressed and they dressed well, regardless of social standing!

carried this brand in the store for years

plaids , cable sweaters classic!

Daper Gent!

Sold BOTANY  suits was a huge line , nice quality and reasonable price point

Another line we carried ,  always loved the tartan logo

Sportcoats ,hats & ties were always apart of sportscar racing in the 50's and 60's
Sero a great shirt maker from Ct, we were one of the first to put it on our shelves in New London Ct.

These ads tell  the story much better than my words. Many of the brands in these ads were carried in the store my Family owned , even though I was a small boy these images and period of time have shaped my fashion sense from the beginning.

MAD about pants!!

a small sampling of some of the fun pants I have acquired I need to wear them as some still have the tags on them!, seems  as i get older I reach for my khaki's  and madras shirts more and more these day, The Lilly pants are prized  as they are hard to come by now

my old Murray's i think they are at least 20 years old
i As I have stated in the past I grew up  with my dad and Grandfather and Uncle owning a fine mens clothing store, I spent SOOO many hours hanging around and eventually working in the store off and on thru my teen years I absorbed so much information and When thinking back I really enjoyed it , I actually become quite sad when I think of all the beautiful clothes we sold an how much of it does not really exists any more or how many of the great names have been watered down , and a shell of there former selves, I.E. Allen Solly, Cross Creek, most Brooks Brothers Items, A&F, Sero shirts, GT trousers, Halrin , YRI actually used to be In Ma. and made some amazing cotton web belts with big brass D  rings I used to have them monogrammed ,
Back to the pants.... One thing I  have certainly noticed is since the onslaught of jeans , most men and ladies don't care about quality pants and the fit. When quality pants are made they are cut with a curve through the hips and a roomy seat and proper rise, deep pockets and quality sewn waistbands and good zippers and provision for a center belt loop and 37 inseam to be tailored to the proper length!
Jeans have caused people to not know how to wear pants! worn too low on the hips , all bunched up at the bottom too tight , in a word pathetic!
Along comes Dockers by Levi, Kahki pants that fit like jeans GRRRR, no seat room no rise, shallow pockets, jean people love them! and levi's has the resources to convince consumers  this  is what they should wear ,Wake UP People! they are junk!!
My dads shop had some amazing trousers  embrodiered cords and poplins, lobsters, whales pheasants etc. real wool tartans in lots of colorations and classic  flannels in several weights , wide whale cords in a rainbow of colors, patch cords , four panel pants in chamois cotton, duck in many colors,  twill breton reds , exquisite calvery twills which draped so beautifully kahki's in cotton twill , polin, and madras patch big bold plaids mini cks. really amazing , the selection I took it for granted as a kid , what I would give to shop in a store like that today!
I see some new companies trying to offer some of these old classics, most times things seem just a little off , fit , motiff seems a little goofy or a tad too big ,  or the colors are just a little off, my conclusion is they really wern't around when the originals were out , I guess you can fool some of the people, some of the time........

Uncle Johns' Garden

Every summer one of the highlights for me is going back to my Grandmothers house which my Uncle John is now the custodian of  he has for years improved something inside or out each year . John is a multi talented person, a fine artist , interior designer, gardener , and expert on period furnature , and home restoration when  visiting I never feel as though my trip is complete unless I stop by the house and see the latest improvements. The house has a lot of great memories for me growing up, and seeing how Uncle John lovingly cares for the house is really special I hope the house can always remain a part of our family!
Living in Fl. is just so really different , not bad just different , I like  old houses , lots of open spaces and things that don't really change suit me well, shopping malls and  constant building, not so much (well a Little Less right now with the state of economy) I've been around different parts of the country, and always try to find  places that , stir my senses like Coastal, Southern New England , so far I haven't found it  I quess that's why I consider it paridise!

Newport and 420 Youth Championships

Just back from a whirlwind tour of ct. R.I. And MA. and a summer of 420 sailing capped off by a Second place in the U.S. Sailing  Youth Championships the best of the best in there respective classes , We are so proud  of J.P., dedication hard work and a true love of sailing , it's nice to see it all come together at the right time!

motored up from Mystic to Newport about 5 hours including the ride out the Mystic river, a shake down cruise for the this classic  Hughes 38 S&S sloop, all went well, sailed in and up too the mooring at the NYYC, Harbor Court is amazing , that sloping lawn and and beautiful Architecture picture perfect !

Newport is a busy place and lots of tourists, I'm not that fond of that , but down on the water front and out in the boat looking at the mansions, and some of the great shops and food, it's all forgiven I look at all the special summer homes of the past and wonder to myself , how glorious it must have been in height of the gilded era........

Pequot house

Had some nice summer weather last week at least from the stand point of  escaping the heat of Florida! celebrated Stacy's birthday 29 forever! at the Pequot House last Fri. the 12th,  a most amazing full moon and pleasent ride over from Mystic, had some fun and ran over at a fast pace to the entrace of West Harbor. Fishers Island is  one of the truly special places on this earth. It's quiet beauty is second to none. The Quot is always jumping  in the full swing of summer a fun mix of families and locals, it is a fun place to be especially on a friday nite! and a birthday too!

as a side note arriving into the harbor at sunset  it was a "sheer" delight to see the IOD and Bullseyes class boats bobbing  in the remaining glitter of sunlight and a full moon up above , ..... for me this is paradise !
  Pictures to follow!

Sunglasses

This is a interesting topic , so many styles it's baffling  cheap , expensive, preppy , chic and way cool. Polarized and non.
Living in Fl. I have tried them all over the years,  they are part of your daily routine here, even on cloudy day it's bright!
I remember in my teen and college years Ray Ban Aviators and Wayfarers and how about Vuarnet, oh thought those were so cool.......
I've always Liked the Ray Ban G15 grey / green lens , glass , great sun protection and won't scratch , but I hate spending 150.00 plus for glasses these days, always seem to drop them in the water, sit on them or they disappear over time, Grrrrr. And to be honest I am bored with the look of them from a preppy standpoint, stylish or not,( Exception the Wayfarer, always cool).
I have been selling Sunglasses retail for years, I sell Oakley , which are great ,  and a wild cool brand called Crown Deluxe http://www.crowndeluxe.com/ , glass  lens, and very rugged  double hinge and fall into the, Way cool frame status.
I also have just added , this week a new brand from Ca. Called Filtrate http://www.filtrateeyewear.com/ they are a fantastic price with stylish and WAY cool frames , polarized $59.99 N0N $49.99 I AM SO PLEASED WITH THE LOOK , THE FIT AND MOST INPORTANT THE LENS QUALITY.   I have most in stock and can ship anywhere! Sunglasses make a statement as well as protectiong your eyes, cool frames compliment any style , but a big wrap frame in tortoise shell with dark lens look great with breton reds, or madras to seersucker! the glasses pictured above are just  3 examples of the looks from Crown and Filtrate,
call me you need them! 772 408-3584

music for your preppy listening pleasure

Seems to me along with dressing in a classic way and traveling and hanging out in preppy enclaves and venues  certain music seem to fit right in .... From jazz to , American standards and , some new wave 80's  and some classic pop and rock tunes , some music just has staying power!
here's my list , some tunes enjoyed  from my childhood, teens years, crazy frat parties ,sailing, driving to work, parties with friends and everything in between! My taste in music runs the Gamut from Lester Lanin Dance band sounds to a few Ac/Dc tunes!
Would like to hear from others as this is simply my list and musical taste vary like the weather in New England

 * no particular order
  • Louis Armstrong- one of the amzzing men of jazz, style, unique, Dixie land magic
  • Bobby Darin- can I say this  Maybe better than  Frank on certain  song , Just love the way he swings with the big bands, we lost one of the greats way too soon!:(
  • The Four Freshman , love the harmony and jazz sound , cool 50's  sounds, inspired Brian wilson and the Beach Boys Harmonies
  • Frank Sinatra- what hasn't been said , my mom , never turned off Frank on the home stereo! I still hear his songs , in my sleep like some kinda , science  experiment!
  • Peggy Lee- jazzy lady , she could really swing, her beautiful voice backed by great bands , a tru classic !
  • Sammie Davis Jr.- There are not enough superlatives to describe this man, dancer , singer , actor, funny man , his voice and phrasing, impeccable a cool dude!
  • Herb Alpert and the TJB Mr. trumpet of the 60's I own everything he has ever done , takes me back too my PF flyers sneakers and the dating game  show , every time!
  • Sergio mendes & Brazil 66- took pop 60's hits and added his jazz bossa nova twist , amazing vocals too, its a cool 60's sound
  • Astrud Gilberto- as a kid i feel in love with her cool matter of fact sound I love samba and Bossa Nova she is my favorite female artist still !!
  • Wes Montgomery- jazz guitar great, self taught genius, no one can play like he did!
  • Diana krall - modern day queen of jazz, i love her sultry sound and command of the piano
  • Beach Boys- words  put to surf beats ,  Brian Wilson took the band far beyond its simple beginnings, I.E. Pet Sounds  I like every note of beach boys , music, it's way more than the few hits you hear on the radio, spend some time with the full albums/cd's , its still fantastic
  • Brian Wilson - I am a fan and a devotee of the music its message and , his introspective  soul bearing lyrics he is still making beautiful music!
  • The Kingsmen - Frat classics, Louie Louie , nuff said!
  • The Lively ones- from 1960 too 1964 instrumental surk music was king, its one of my top 3 forms of music, I love the driving sound and  the image of hundred of So. Cal. kids stomping there feet in their white Levi's ,Pendleton shirts and converse hi tops to the sounds after a day of fun surfing , everyone should treat themselves too the sounds of early surf music!
  • Beatles- I don't love every song , but some are pure pop masterpieces
  • The EnglishBeat - Ska , Punk Reggae, Jazz, awesome !
  •  Pretenders- I love this band ! my college years and so many great songs , I hear one and I am transported back in time!
  • Badfinger- probably the best , least heard band from the lates 60's early 70's , the Beatles endorsed them , that should say something!
  • John Mayer- Despite is bad record with Famous Girlfriends, this thinking mans , pop rocker ,  has perhaps the best sound over the last few years
  • Blondie - fringe punk, lots of fun definitely remember their Saturday Nitr Live performances , so cool  was Debra Harry
  • The Rascals - from frat party classics , to late 60's peace music , this band is SO underrated!

  • Steely Dan- 70's rock  jazz classics I learned to drive around Old Lyme listening to this stuff!
  • Lester Lanin - does this one  even need a explanation!
  • Lawerance welk - why? there is just something about the champagne music ! its light and airy, and cocktail party fun......
  • Bob Marley
Think that's a good list to start with!

    MY 2 cents on scents!

I've read  prep men don't use fragrances, and I have known a few fellows, who say they wear nothing, hmmm, I find that a little unusual, from a hygienic stand point . I  have never gone a day without shaving, that said I hate shaving. lets face it shaving is rough on the skin. I like aftershave , razor blades are known to have bacteria , aftershave has alcohol which kills the germs and tones the skin.
THIS NEED NOT BE A OVERPOWERING AFFAIR.  I.E. ARAMUS, one of  the stinkiest ever!
and a whole host of scents from, every singer, actor and anyone else who has had 5 minutes of fame over the last 20 years.
Here's my suggestions, These elixir's can be expensive and if you buy one and hate  it your stuck with expensive stinky bottles of stuff you'll never use'
sounds funny but I love the barber shop classics from Clubman, they are reasonably priced , have neat vintage labels and bottle shapes and most important , smell great  in  the classic sense , I like  3 tried and tru favorites   Bay rum, it's clean slightly spicy  sent is refreshing in the summer, clove and bay leaf  remind one of the Spice Islands.  I also like in the warmer months , Lime sec, it  is a very nice citrus  scent , its not long lasting , but works perfect as a aftershave and is a very cool clean and sporty .
for winter months I like the Clubman Special Reserve, a warm leather,  woods  with a spicy finish best for cooler times of the year( Think your favorite baseball glove as a kid) I have read reviews claiming it's a amazing scent rivaling  famous scents that cost upwards of $100.00   special reserve is $10.00!
These are very nice classic scents and have been around since the 1950's , Clubman as a brand since the 1800's , they will cost you no more than $12.00 for the large bottles  If your like me and need a aftershave  after shaving , Clubman is a great traditional choice!

Been reviewing my thoughts on fragrance , and my convictions on Bay Rum , really it is the perfect classic scent , I wanted to add a few more that I have in my collection, even though they all  are bay rum each company is just slightly different.
Superior 70, a fantastic Bay rum, light , crisp and of course made from the natural Bay  leaf oils, this little Gem ,  will run you a whopping $3.00!!  Ha , amazing , from Puerto Rico and made by a Rum Distiller of quality  drinking rums , hey how can this be wrong!:) The bottle is not fancy and half of the Label is in Spanish , it can be hard to find , but it is worth the effort add it too your collection , I promise you will be rewarded. I will be stocking this and selling thru the website !

Grenada Arawak Island Bay Rum I don't think it can be any more genuine than this! created in the "spice Island" this gem, has a hint of menthol , so it's as refreshing as a West Indies Breeze! really after a set of  tennis, round of Golf , a day of sailing , on a warm day , this is the ultimate Bay rum, the usual bay rum charm with a blast of cool, exhilarating to say the least. I have been to Grenada  several times , it is a captivating place ,  the scent of clove , nutmeg, cinnamon, bay leaves, fill the warm breezes, tropical blooms abound,  crystal waters and a sailors Paradise, splash on this bay rum and your almost there! I am really happy to be offering this product here in the states , it will be available thru our website, it is truly the most unique Bay rum, I have encountered all for $10.00!

In conclusion,  above are three Bay Runs all under $15.00 they do the same thing as the others , costing $30-$50 , Royall Lyme, and St. Johns etc. they have lovely bottles and my family was one of the firsts to sell these two fine brands, years back , they are great fragrances. I just think Clubman , Arawak, and superior 70 are the best for the price , they smell great tone the skin and evoke the true essence of Bay rum , the islands , warm breezes and casual elegence and being a gentleman. Besides what you can save in buying these you can put toward tennis lessons withe the club pro!

    Lost art of dressing

Walk down the street of any Classic New England town or coastal Fl. or really anywhere and take a glance at what people are wearing!, men it camo, and tank tops, ladies in too much denim and flipflops for every occasion , it's really sad. Yes you will see a few classically dressed , Even people in the Know , I believe are aware of the way too casual dress code of their fellow man these days and dress down, its as if one has to stay in certain circles of excusitivity to dress proper anymore . Maybe it is just Fl. it's hot here!, maybe people just don't care anymore. I know times change , My Dad and Grandfather I don't think ever owned a pair of jeans, I really don't wear them, except with a oxford shirt and Shetland cable sweater.
Why Don't people care about how they look, ? the cost is high these days to have nice things ......
But I'd rather have one nice J.Press oxford than 3  no iron plastic shirts! I cherish my old patch work madras slacks, my son has taken ownership of a pair of patch navy and kelly green cords I wore 30 years ago , they still look great!
Yes I know those of us called Prep, Prepsters,   , know how to dress and at any given nite at certain yacht clubs  and country clubs etc. many people look great, in there Breton reds, Lilly Etc.  . That said I have been at regatta's and clubs where people still can't get it together , it's  disappointing and at times i feel like a lost Concordia in a sea of Catalina 30's functional, but oh so boring ( if you know anything about sailboats you will understand that!)
My Father who ran a lovely men's shop for 40 plus years said in the last years before her retired, late 90's, his customers were simply dying off, their children were too caught up in labels and outlet malls to take the time to learn the art of dressing, This does not mean  one must spend loads of money either , just adding one nice item every once in awhile and build your wardrobe, quality Khaki's, a nice Shetland sweater ,  pair of topsiders,  nice navy blazer , 3 button, lightweight summer wool and a flannel  for winter,  oxford shirts , blue, pink , white,  all cotton,  tropical weight plain front grey flannels  trousers and heaver ones for winter , rep stripe ties and club novelties add a pair of cordovan loafers from Brooks Brother or a Alden tassle slip on, I like the Aldens as i can dress them  up or down .    Of course this is just a breif list of things, i 'd be happy to elaborate , just ask...... Oh well The best we can do , for those of us who Know is to teach our children to take pride in their dress and wear the code of honor ., Pink and Green forever.

My thoughts on classic ladies fashion........

Classic  early 60's fashion, note the bermuda bag!

    1964 Classic Bonwit  teller ad
There are a few things I think just  belong in a ladies closet ,of prep clothing,  You may be asking what am I doing commenting on such things, I was raised around ladies with fantastic style and a wife who knows a thing or two:)
Belgian shoes of New York http://www.belgianshoes.com/  these classic slipons have such understated style, from bright Palm Beach colors to , animal prints and linens these shoes should be in every girls closet!
of coarse  living in Fl. anything Lilly Pulitzer, skirts shoes accessories for us here I can only say C. Oricco of Palm Beach  I have been on a first name basis for many years with a few of the sales Ladies , sadly for my wallet! there are certain days and events when nothing seems more right than Lilly , on a stylish classic Lady.
Jack Rogers sandals , The Navajo is a staple for summer so many color  combinations the possibilities are endless.

I love the old Lord &taylor ad, this one from 1963 still a stylish look

1964, lov the art , gloves , hair , suit
Head bands, another must, grosgrain ribbon, gingham ck. and of course Madras and tartan, youthful, fun and a way to add a splash of color to any outfit, for me they just look right!
Sweaters, solid Shetland cardigans, with the grosgrain ribbon running down the placket front , they are light warm and look great with buttondowns turtlenecks , shirts and khaki's. I remember my mother   having  a few particularly nice Fair Isle trim around the collar ,not huge just a single band of pattern  for color on a heather grey or blue solids. They were from our Family store which imported Scottish woollens from the ,  middle 60's onward , I also think she had some from years back from a great shop in Ct  I think Guilford? Outdoor Traders .

this is 1966, could be today , classic tunic dress
I am working with a small Scottish knitting mill, I think I am going to work on that Fair Isle  trim,  such a classic look.

Update 8 /27/11 I am in the works of getting the grosgrain trim Cardigans made as well as the classic Fair Isle as well, these sweaters are from Shetland Isles authentic in every way , beautifully made , I am very excited about these !
I love a classic Khaki slack, perhaps slightly tapered leg , or cropped  always plain front , conventional construction, Cotton twill or poplin , worn with flats , a polo , oxford BD , turtleneck , cardigan, fleece , so many options , so many ways to be classicly correct!
1966 this could be palm beach today , good looks always resurface

    Classic White Tennis Hat

100% cotton with green undervisor shade, classic!
When I was a kid I always admired the natty gents who wore their loose fit navy blazers, faded Nantucket reds  or khaki's , blue oxford or polo knit with a classic tennis hat,  just a quintessential   look, relaxed  comfortable, and functional isn't that what what we all look for in a hat ?
Lets face it the Baseball cap rules it's everywhere and and sometimes just plain lacking style. I like them with yacht club burgee's or special events that mean something, or in my case a well worn Red Sox cap is always in favor!
Bring on  the Tennis hat! , perfect for anything out in the sun , not just tennis, sailing ,  walking , and broken in it will become a favorite just like the favorite ball cap it just looks better when your a little more dressed and  just right 60's summer cool.
Our hat is 100% lightweight cotton , with shade green under brim,  the Tartan Terrier logo is discretely placed on the side band  these hats won't just keep you cool , they are cool.! Well, unless your a turd like Spaulding from Caddy Shack!!

Polo Shirts , they are not created equal

Ever  think polo shirts are different?, Take a closer look and you will see they have pretty much morphed into the same  forms.  Most today have have several distinct features which I feel have cheapened them over the last few years
the front placket in most case only has 2 buttons now and all shirts pretty much  have a banded cuff at the sleeve end. Also almost never do you see a chest pocket .
Being the one who thinks the past was better when it comes to clothes, I decided to see if I could come up with a better polo, so 3 buttom placket , with wood tone buttons, gives you some versatility sometimes you don't want the neck hanging open which is what happens with only 2 buttons. I think the hemmed sleeve just feels better , no binding cuff and no riding up your upper arm and a much more tailored look. lastly I have added a pocket, good place for sunglasses , notes etc. and our logo you can have none , on the sleeve or above the pocket , I think our terrier is cute, but not everyone should be forced to wear something on there shirt!
years ago  there were lots of  knit shirt option ,  I hope my Tartan Terrier  Polo fills a void   I hope you  do too

    why Tartan Terrier

Growing up surounded by beautiful clothing, I have become almost shocked at whats available to  consumers who still want and demand  classic functional clothing with style . I  can't believe that a nice 100% cotton button down oxford really can't be had any more! for under $100.00 I'M not talking the sad excuse Brooks Brothers NO Iron cotton of today what a piece of junk, who wants a shirt covered with a plastic coating so it won't wrinkle this shirt is a little piece of hell, so hot its unbearable to wear and irritates the neck, It seems all the companies have jumped on this bandwagon,  really sad, I guess  Polo still has the oxford shirt 100% cotton , that stupid pony , minus the pocket parading across your chest ,  Am I the only one sick of that darn Pony?! yes the fabrics and style of the Ralph Lauren Items is most times spot on, but people need to remember he is a copy cat he did not invent traditional clothes he took the best of English and american style and created a image , put a Polo Pony on everything and for some reason people feel they are missing something in life if they are not wearing RL. I guess more power too you if you can pull off the greatest marketing job  the fashion industry has ever seen.
        Enough ranting!
As for the Tartan Terrier , I have since a very young age been fascinated , with tartan, its history , colors and patterens when i used to hang around my dads clothing store as a kid I just loved the sportcoats, and wool trousers in there bold plaids, rich reds and greens, so smart with a navy blazer or shetland sweater. In the summer the Madras plaid, soft, light , comfortable, available in just about everything, caps, Bermuda shorts, belts, sportcoats, its my favorite, nothing says summer like Madras.
I grew up with terrier dogs, I have 3 now, they are amazing, fun rugged , cute, smart , full of energy always up for adventure, these dog inspire life! they always have a little glimmer in there eyes, ready for anything!
they are the most loving , loyal dogs I have ever been around.
It is thru these amazing dog I have been inspired to create , my clothing line, fun clothes for people who live the sporting life, sailing, horses, tennis, etc, preppy traditional clothing built to last, unique items from days gone by, when clothing items were cherished in  ones wardrobe, favorites cared for and passed down.
I hope to create clothes and accessories I remember from my youth, things that are hard to find, that are missed, and will make you smile and become favorites in you wardrobe.

cocktail slippers country club chic !

I have been creating and developing several new items for my clothing line, I am  very excited about the custom , country club or cocktail slippers with leather sole for indoor or outdoor use, most noteably seen, in velvet with embroidered crests or motifs, I have developed the shoes in a wide rage of fabrics, from pink and green  brights too of course my signature look of Tartan or Madras fabrics these classic club shoes are great for Men and woman who demand something different and a casual elegance to there style.
I"ll be putting up a  fabric and shoe samples and of course you can visit the website and store  and see what we are all about http://www.tartanterrier.com/, and order your very own!
